Pathways to Peace is a two-year democracy and constitution-building project of Youth Initiative aims to structurally transform the way that youth participate in the civic and political arena so that they play a substantial and positive role in supporting the peace and democratization process in Nepal.
Pathways-to-Peace seeks the following more immediate results:
- More politically aware youth constituency
- National dialogue on key civic and political issues that includes youth
- Youth participation in democratization processes from the grassroots to the national level
The project mobilizes the traditionally marginalized youth from across dividing lines to work as one force for democracy and peace. It creates multiple channels to enable youth to have input in the democratization process.
This is collective campaign of youth of Nepal where a consortium between Association of Youth Organization Nepal (AYON), Youth Action Nepal (YOAC), Search for Common Ground (SFCG) and Y Magazine has been working together to achieve the goal of P2p.
Civic Education and Training
Civic Leadership School:- An intensive 5-day residential program, provides training for leaders from students and youth organizations. It aims at strengthening their leadership skills, capacity to build relationships across dividing lines, and non-adversarial advocacy skills. A total of 250 youth will be trained in civic leadership in 10 trainings. Again, the participants will represent the diversity of Nepal and balancing participants in terms of gender, class, caste/ethnicity, region, religion, and language will be a priority. Youth Initiative will recruit the participants and SFCG will make the final selection, based on demonstrated leadership, commitment to democratic values, and growing potential as future leaders at the local or national level.
Civic Education:- Quarterly seminars organized with the help of campus-based student organizations, on subjects that are timely and important for civic education, such as: democratic institutions, rule of law, constitution development, and political affairs. A total of 120 civic and political forums will be held on 20 campuses, reaching an estimated 6,000 youths.
Media
Y! (Common Ground Magazine):-Youth magazine aimed at providing a platform for youth perspectives on various issues including peace and democracy. It showcases stories of young peace builders and offers diverse views and serves to highlight the various other components and activities of Pathways to Peace.
Youth Participation in Democratization Process
Youth Federation: -This project constitutes series of consultation meetings at ten strategic locations, regionally and centrally, with leaders and representatives of youth groups interested in the possible formation of a National Youth Federation. Consultation meetings are also held as needed, with government, civil society, and bilateral agencies, to rally support and ensure sustainability of the programs.
Youth Constituent Assembly:- Workshops at the regional and central (national) levels, enabling young leaders from diverse political, caste and ethnic backgrounds to write a youth constitution. The final document of the National Youth Assembly will be submitted to the Constituent Assembly’s drafting committee and disseminated through the media.
After many years of struggle and conflict, Nepal has accomplished the historical constituent assembly election and the constituent making process is set off. In this context YOAC Nepal in partnership with Search For Common Ground (SFCG) is going to create Youth Constituent Assemblies at the regional and central (national) levels, enabling young leaders from diverse political, caste and ethnic backgrounds to write a youth constitution. It will provide a forum for young people to identify the issues that they wish to see incorporated in the constitution and give policy recommendations. Regional Constituent Assembly will be conducted in three Development Regions. A national Assembly will be conducted in Kathmandu with 80 participants including participants of Regional Assembly and other participants from indigenous group. The National Assembly forms a drafting committee which would draft a youth constitution. The final product will be publicized in a press conference and submitted to the national parliament and the constitution drafting committee as the consensus opinion of Nepal’s youth.
Intergenerational Dialogue:- Dialogues at the community level to create channels for youth to work with policy makers to influence key decisions that are relevant to young people. It will generate mechanisms to address and prevent generational conflicts, increase understanding, and hopes to serve as a practical example for inclusive, participatory democracy.
