International Year of Youth

Youth Initiative (YI) has been investing in young people and cherishing youth resource as a partner of today and future of tomorrow since its establishment in 2001. Every year YI celebrates International Youth Day (IYD) organizing different events from youth rally, musical concert to policy advocacy. Since 2004 YI has joined hands with other youth organizations and advocated for the National Youth Policy (NYP). In following years, YI together with other youth organizations formed Association of Youth Organization (AYON) and continued advocating for National Youth Policy. Finally a task force was formed to draft the NYP and on 14 Magh 2066, NYP was endorsed by Ministerial cabinet.

This year UN is celebrating International Year of Youth (IYY) 2010-2011: OUR YEAR, OUR VOICE. Under the theme ‘Dialogue and Mutual Understanding’ the Year aims to encourage dialogue and understanding across generations and promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and freedoms, and solidarity.

YI is celebrating the IYY throughout the year starting from IYD, 12 August 2010.On this very day, with the contextual background of NYP in hand, YI together with AYON is organizing a dialogue program “National Youth Policy: Achievement and Implementation” to discuss about the NYP, its implementation, challenges, effectiveness and way forward. The program will be a platform for the youth to get familiarize with the NYP and also have an opportunity to discuss about. There will be speakers from the committee of NYP drafting task force, MOYS and YI and AYON will present their idea of implementing NYP.

Besides this program YI will also present “Youth Initiative Award” to three youth leaders for their exceptional idea of youth leadership and community service. They will be given away Rs. 20,000 as a cash prize along with certificate and capacity building training. YI will also produce T-shirts and other merchandises marking the IYY throughout the year.

YI will organize different programs in our Strategic Locations (Biratnagar, Janakpur, Chitwan, Butwal, Dhangadi, Nepalgunj, Jumla, Dang, and Pokhara) on the same day.

This youth guide is prepared by youth for youth who are interested in starting a youth-led organization. It is intended for youth between the ages of 16-29 who are relatively new to youth-led organization but have the desire to take a leadership role to make a positive contribution in their community.
