Under this theme, we have 5 days residential training program to a day workshop to build capacity of Nepalese youth in the area of Human rights, Democratization and Civic Leadership. Civic Leadership School is a 5 days residential program where participant from every walk of life go through series of outdoor and indoor activities that challenges their physical and intellectual comfort zones. By the end of the training, participants make action plan to reinforce their leadership skills. Training on Political Culture Democracy and Society is a 3 days residential training program which aims to foster and strengthen democratic practices amongst the young people as Nepal is going through this crucial democratic transition. This is an opportunity for Nepalese youth to learn and plan together for promoting democratic values at institutional and individual level. Similarly YI will carry out two-day residential training on Human Rights and Democratization at strategic locations targeting local (district and regional) leaders from various youth and student organizations (partisan and non-partisan), FSU members.
Moreover, YI also conduct series of workshops on Human Rights issues at its strategic location sites. The workshop conducted in which include guest lecture, group work, documentary etc and focused on fundamentals of Human rights, procedures of Democratization. The purpose of this workshop is to increase knowledge of youth in civic issues particularly on democratization, human rights and related topics.
Campaign/Days CelebrationTo promote democracy, peace and non-violence, YI along with other civil society organizations, partisan youth, professional youth, students, entrepreneurs and journalist collective start campaigns are being undertaken. This year we have started national level campaign after organizing Integrity Conference with an aim to promote integrity. Conference was a gathering of people from different walks of life; politicians, government officials, civil society leaders, entrepreneurs, business person, journalists etc. Above all, people who want to be a part of solution and promote integrity. On the same day we launched Bhrastachari Lai Kira Paros "May the Corrupt Rot"-anti corruption campaign along with future programs for the same cause.
Right to Information is another campaign that is going together with anti-corruption movement. Our strategic location in Morang district has initiated this campaign and has organized "Information is my Right and ensure every Nepali people equal access to technology and information during two days signature collection campaign at Computer Association Nepal (CAN) Morang, East IT community and leaders. Moreover, we are en route to campaigns for civic issues which aimed at development process in all strategic locations. In addition YI also marks International Days like International Youth Day, Non-Violence Day, Peace Day, Human Rights Day, Volunteers Day and Anti-Corruption Day etc.
Apprenticeship in political youth and student organizations
YI provides opportunity for Nepalese youth through apprenticeship in its strategic locations. Nepali Youth are chosen through applications to work as an apprentice in political youth and student organizations. In the course of apprenticeship, apprentice will learn system of political youth and student organization as well as provide administrative, programmatic and any other official support that helps to bridge the gap between partisan and non partisan youth.
Theme 2: Youth in Governance
Trainings/Workshops:
Series of trainings cum workshops on governance are conducted in Kathmandu and other strategic locations. Basically, the workshops aims to increase youth participation against corruption, promote transparency, accountability and ethical leadership among government authorities, leaders, and political parties and their youth and student wings. Workshops called Youth Advocacy for Accountability and Transparency (YAATra) is one day workshop which aims to supports youth, youth organizations and other stakeholders to raise youth voices against corruption. The workshops intended to enable youth organizations to involve and mobilize youth as active stakeholders for transparency and accountability in governance. YAATra, also aims to enhance public sector accountability and transparency and develop greater public awareness about the need and requirements of good governance. Similarly 2 days training cum workshop Youth Advocacy and Action for Accountability and Responsibility focuses on the major bottlenecks impeding progress on the Constitution drafting and Peace Process and to brainstorm solutions on those issues. Youth from every walk of life can participate on the event to learn the concept of accountability and responsibility and also able share their views with fellow participants.
Volunteerism
To create and increase volunteer opportunities to enrich youth, address community needs and develop a lifetime commitment to service Youth Initiative provides volunteering opportunity for young people of Nepal. YI involves young people in community service projects that are challenging, rewarding and educational. This also promotes among young people a greater understanding and appreciation for the diversity of their community. Annually YI calls for application for National Youth Service to know about the local governance, how the VDC, DDC function and how they can contribute their knowledge and experience at the local level. Volunteers are deployed to different strategic locations for 2 weeks duration. Similarly YI encourages young people to act against corruption through volunteerism at local to national level.
Awards
Youth Initiative (YI) Award was launched in 2004 for the first time on 12 August marking the International Youth Day to strengthen, support, and celebrates the role of young people in leading positive change in their communities. Every year, exceptional young social entrepreneurs are honored with ‘Youth Initiative Award' following a competitive application process. Since its inauguration, YI Award has produced over 30 alumni who worked/are working in different social issues through their innovative ideas.
This year, Youth Initiative Award is named as an Integrity Award, which is a part of its continuous effort to promoting integrity and fight against corruption. Hence the award seeks out the Nepal's most promising youth advocates who have the potential to make a big impact against corruption. Integrity Award recognizes the inspirational efforts of youth an unsung hero who work or have an idea to eradicating corruption and establishing good governance in their spheres of influence. Award also promotes the idea of youth regarding how and why they can influence the society on promoting integrity and strengthening governance on a broader scale for greater social impact.
Theme 3: Youth in Common Platform
Smart Club & Moon Camp
A weekly dialogue session on 'Smart Club' provides common platform for youth and students in each strategic location. It also aims to engaging them in personality development, critical thinking, public speaking and presentation skills. This would also be an opportunity for youth to share their ideas and meet regularly in the strategic location office.
Moon Camp is the event which brings youths together from various walks of life to carry out creative activities of social importance on the eve of Fagu purnima (full moon day) to celebrate Holi (festival of colors) in different way. We utilize this event as a common platform where youth can celebrate the color of festive with the difference.
Capacity Building/Institutional Development:
Capacity building is a process involving the building, utilization, retention and nurturing of human skills, institutions and knowledge. We believe regular capacity building events that are necessary to strengthen institutional and programmatic competencies. Through different meetings, exposure visits and training session at national and international level provide opportunities to enhance the capacity of the staff and board members.. General and need base capacity building programs are organized in regular basis to improve the professional competencies.
Coordination/Collaboration/Networking:
Coordination, collaboration and networking is one of the strategic approaches of YI to implement activities at local and national level. Through different meetings, consultation and collaboration activities we expand our network amongst Government and National/International non government entities. We will continue explore like minded organization to work together under the three thematic areas as per our Strategic and Operational Plan (2009-2013).
