Life Skills Development

The adolescents/youth is the most vital, for that is the phase when one forms one's ideologies and identity, one's direction in life, and one's moral concept of right and wrong. This is the time when one is not as immature as before and yet not fully mature enough to step into the world. This is the most challenging phase for them and for the family, society and the nation. The rapid growth of Urbanization, modernization, industrialization, with its pros and cons, has made adolescence period even difficult.

To meet these challenges Youth Initiative has come up with yet another intervention: “The Life Skill Camp”.

"Life Skills Development Programme" of Youth Initiative is an effort to make that investment in young people. We hope that with right tools and guidance, young people will be in a better position to tackle their multifaceted problems, develop to their fullest potential and be able to grow into responsible adults.

The overall goal of the programme is to enhance life skills of young people. This will contribute to their physical, emotional, intellectual and social development, leading them to a responsible and self-sufficient adulthood.

The life skills training camps are based on camp module and are residential. They are participatory and practical. The training camp is dedicated to the exploration and exchange of knowledge through interactive indoor and outdoor programs. The program is designed to challenge participants coming from an increasingly complex and fast-paced society to examine their personal lives, their interactions with other people, while enhancing life skills.

The methodology involves lectures, discussions, case studies, games, role-plays, simulations, video and documentaries, group work, personal reflections and sharing, story telling, handouts and notes, etc.

Usually the camp takes place in Environmental Resource Center which is located at Sipadole, Bhaktapur.

The tentative contents/subject matters that are covered under the life skills development program are as follows:

  • Self Awareness
  • Managing Emotions
  • Creative Thinking
  • Problem Solving
  • Effective communication
  • Leadership skills
  • Decision-making
  • Coping with stress
  • Empathy

Apart from this the camp also include:

  • Group dynamics
  • Survival Skills
  • Nature hike
