Towards civic engagement of youth

I had never thought of taking initiation for a change in a society but today I made the action plan with my friends to work for change from my level. It was expressed by one of the participant at civic concerns workshop held at Public Information centre Kamaladi on 24 April 2010. It efforts to harness the young potentials and fosters civic engagement of youth so that they are more capable to shoulder the national global responsibilities. The objective of the program was to promote civic education and active citizenry, to enhance the leadership capacities of the young leaders and enhance a wide range of skills needed in different aspect of the young people’s engagement. Civic concerns workshop intends to find the civic issues form the youth and tries to find the answer within them self. The participants were between the ages of 16 to 29.

The workshop started with the introduction of organization and participant and was followed by the session prioritizing pressing issues where participant raised various issues like climate change, education system, power cut, women empowerment, corruption, discrimination haphazard checking of answer sheet by HSEB, water sanitation, pollution etc.

The other session was for documentary named Freedom is Not Free by Shiva Khere and the discussion was done on the issues like corruption, patriotism, good governance which was shown in documentary. After the documentary the final session was Ideas into Action. Here participant were divided into four groups and were asked choose issues of their concerns where they want be a change maker and make presentation of their action plan to work on issue. The issues chosen for action plan were west management, clean city, education on child labor and improving education system of Nepal.

It is intended for youth between the ages of 16-29 who are relatively new to youth-led organization but have the desire to take a leadership role to make a positive contribution in their community.
