Youth/Student Movement: Searching For New Avenues

| More

18 Apr 2010, Kathmandu

Although the movements led by young people have brought immense change in Nepal, the focus of the young people should now shift to issues of young people together with national issues, was the opinion of the participants of the Paper Presentation  on the topic "Revisiting Student/youth movement in Nepal: Way Forward" organized by Youth Initiative. Mr Jhalak Subedi, welknown journalists and editor of Mulyankan magazine presented his paper with an analysis of the origin and growth of student/youth movement in Nepal. He gave details of how young people ignition from the street has been seen as an indicator for success of the revolutions at the political sphere. But to their dismay, the achievements of the revolutions far from being institutionalized, the state has not provided any opportunities for young people. Although a general realization among the stakeholders of youth is found regarding changing the role of youth/ student movement in Nepal now at a time when there is huge achievements at the political sphere of national life.

The commentators of the paper Mr Mahindra Sharma (Nepal Student Union) , Kul Bahadur K C "Sonam" (UCPN- Maoists) and Pradip Gyawali (UML) applauded the paper but also pointed out  that the paper doesn't have future direction of the youth/ student engagement. Mr Mahindra Sharma, himself an young activist, opined that since young people are not given space after the changes, the changes are not institutionalized. Young people, by default, are attracted to new thoughts and ideas to which older generations might see unrealistic. Speaking on the topic, Mr Sonam held high the contributions of young people but also said that the political achievements are far from complete and young people must engaged in politics however with different focus. Mr Pradip Gyawali opined that young people are frustrated because they are neither represented at the decision making body not are their issues heard. He was of the opinion that rather then the young people it is the adult people who need to rethink on the ways to capitalize young people's energy and zeal.

The discussion got heated up with one of the 90 participants pradip bhandari asking for the policies that the political party must ensure to get more young people involved into their parties. Among participants Sita Thapa, Mohan Rumba, Dilu sapkota and Narayani Khadka spoke that young people shouldn't be seen only as mob for the street revolutions but also as a creative minds. For majority of the participants, youth and student movement in Nepal should now focus concretely on issues related to Education, health and employment, professionalism and Nation building.

This program was a part of National Young Leaders' Forum organized by AYON, Youth Initiative, Youth Action from 16th to 18th of April 2010 at Nepal Administrative Staff College, Jawlakhel, Lalitpur. The three days event which has 6 parallel sessions and 4 plenary sessions had 250 young people as regular participants from different regions of Nepal.

The program which was facilitated by Narayan Adhikari for Youth Initiative was conducted as one of the parallel sessions in the National Youth Leaders' Forum.
