Youth Initiative (YI) organized a discussion program in Kathmandu marking the International Youth Day 2010. The topic of the discussion was “National Youth Policy: Achievement and Implementation”. The objectives of the discussion were to inform youth about the existence of the National Youth Policy and to suggest concerned authorities for its improvement for effective implementation.The key note speakers were Bharat Pyakurel Nepali, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ram Kumari Jhakri, President of ANNFSU, Kabindra Burlakoti, one of the members of Task Force, Himal Sharma, Joint Secretary, ANNFSU (R), Abhishek Shah, Program Officer, YI, Pradip Pariyar, President, AYON shared their experiences during the development of the policy and suggested for the improvement of the policy. The speakers emphasized that the policy still has some drawbacks such as age definition, lack of feeling of ownership, not clear about the structure of the youth council etc. However it was satisfactory that the policy is on hand. Druing the session, YI shared its model to support National Youth Council.
At the end of the program, Anita Thapa, Treasurer, YI, shared about the concept of Youth Initiative Award and after that the Youth Initiative Award worth Rs. 20,000 each was distributed to 3 youth for their creative project ideas. The award winners were: Dr. Naresh Kumar Joshi for his concept on ‘1 dollar per day’, Mila Shrestha for ‘Environment Conservation’ and Rajan Lamsal for ‘ICT Awareness’.The MC of the program was Nabraj Gautam, Vice-President, AYON and Prakash Pyakurel, President, YI, moderated during the discussion program. The program was organized in the hall of Center for Constitutional Dialogue, New Baneswor. 38 participants including students, youth leaders, and members of youth organizations participated in the discussion.
This year has been regarded as the International Year of Youth and the slogan for throughout the year is “Dialogue and Mutual Understanding”. The slogan for the day was “Our Year: Our Voice”.
